William A. Slacas, 85, of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025. Born on July 7, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio. William lived a life marked by family, dedication, and service.
A proud graduate of East High School in January 1958, William excelled as a defensive tackle and center, earning All-State honors as a center. His athletic prowess secured a full-ride football scholarship to the University of Nebraska. William’s passion for football continued as he played semi-professionally from 1961 to 1967 for the Cleveland Bulldogs, Canton Bulldogs, and Philadelphia Bulldogs. In 1964, he signed with the Cleveland Browns, a testament to his talent and determination. Beyond football, William enjoyed numerous sports, including softball, bowling, horseshoes, and especially golf, where he found joy in friendly competitions.
William married his beloved wife, Deborah McMahon, on August 6, 1960, and together they built a loving family. He was a devoted father to his four children: Christine (Rick), William (Suzanne), Robert, and Kathleen, and a cherished grandfather to Sydney, Bradley, Nicole, Mia, and Liam.
As a skilled plumber, William completed his apprenticeship on June 16, 1967, and became a committed member of Plumbers Local Union 55 in Cleveland. His work ethic and craftsmanship were admired by all who knew him.
William was preceded in death by his beloved wife Deborah, his parents, William and Dorothy Severance Slacas, and his sister, Patricia Blakely. His love for his family was boundless, and he leaves behind a legacy of warmth and strength.
William will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Holy Angels, 18205 Chillicothe Road, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, 44023 on May 19, 2025. Visitation is from 10 AM to 11 AM, with Mass to follow at 11 AM. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice in William’s memory.
