“This is the happiest year of my life” said Tim Conway Jr. to the startled fifteen member Conway family at their annual Christmas dinner at their Shaker Heights home in December 1959. The group was startled because Tim had had a very rough year, indeed. But he went on to explain: “I just joined an organization called Alcoholics Anonymous and, one day at a time, I’m on my way!” Not only was he on his way but hundreds and eventually thousands were on their way to a new life of sobriety and service, following the words and example of his life and that of his good friend Pete Hoyt; lives of dedicated service and selfless sobriety. And through their example tens of thousands of families have been enhanced and many of them saved for the everlasting benefit of Cleveland and beyond, stretching as far as the eye can see. Tim was one of eleven boys and two girls born to Margaret Conway and Tim Conway Senior, who was a first generation Irishman and long-time president of Cleveland’s then largest food chain, Fisher Foods. Like eight of his brothers, Tim attended Gesu elementary school and University School, where he was a star on the football team and captain of the hockey team. In World War II he won his pilot wings in the Navy. After the war, he starred in sports at Williams College, graduating in 1948. He returned to the insurance business of Conway & Conway before becoming full time Employee Counselor at National City Bank, helping start a new trend in employer-employee relations. He was a man of faith who loved his family, sang with bold enthusiasm, and was known for his wisdom, his gentle heart, and the explosive Conway laugh. Tim is survived by his dear wife Carolyn, his daughters Kathy Conway Murray, Suzy Conway Merriam, Cary Eustis (husband Frank) and son Tim Conway III; grandchildren Chad Munn (wife Tracie), Danny Murray, Kate and Jessie Merriam, Zachary and Hannah Eustis; three great-grandchildren; brothers Bud, Bill, Tommy, Terry, Neil, and a sister, Peggy Conway McMullen; sisters-in-law Mary Conway and Marty Conway, along with many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wife, Martha Munn Conway, along with his sister, Mary Conley, and brothers Dan, Bob, Jack, Jim and Gerry. “If my father (Jack) was ‘a man of few words’” said his nephew Dan, “Uncle Tim was a man of wise words—seeking serenity, courage and wisdom while helping others along the way.”
