Sylvia Piper, one of the few remaining original “Rosie the Riveters”, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2015 in Beachwood Ohio. Sylvia was born to immigrant parents in 1926 and raised in a small town outside of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. At the age of 17 she left home for New York to answer the call of the United States Government for women to support the war effort. Sylvia worked in a factory making B24 Liberators, which ended World War II as the most produced heavy bomber in history. For those of you that remember the era of the Andrew sisters, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Jitterbugging and getting your information on the radio you are familiar with “Rosie the Riveter.” Rosie was a term used to describe women, like Sylvia who were called upon to replace male workers who were drafted into the military. Someone had to work in the factories making airplanes, munitions and supplies to be used in the war effort and Sylvia enthusiastically answered the call. Sylvia and her late husband William, a WWII veteran, are survived by 3 children, Margy Sanders, Bill (Kelly), Rick (Candy); 9 grandchildren, Marty, Micah, Mindi, Matt, Bill Jimmy (deceased), Samantha, Allie and Cameron; and 8 beloved great grandchildren. Throughout her life, Sylvia epitomized the spirit of Rosie the Riveter as a reminder to all of us to try new things, test our limits, and believe in ourselves and others. .
