Paul S. Brentlinger

Paul S. Brentlinger died in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, on December 22, 2014, of complications following a stroke.  He was born April 3, 1927, in Dayton, Ohio, to Arthur Brentlinger and Welthy Otello Smith Brentlinger. Paul enrolled at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he remained for one month before joining the U.S. Army at the close of World War II.  He received an honorable discharge late in 1946.  Paul returned to Michigan early in 1947, where he enrolled in both the College of Literature, Science and Arts, and the School of Business Administration. He received an AB degree in 1950 and an MBA in 1951, both with distinction.  While at Michigan, he was in the ROTC program, Phi Beta Kappa, the Acacia Fraternity, and he worked as the city editor of The Michigan Daily. Paul had a career of more than 60 years in the business world, most recently as a partner at Morgenthaler Ventures, and earlier with Harris Corporation, where he was Chief Financial Officer. He served on the boards of directors of Ferro Corporation, Allegheny Technologies, and Hypres, Inc.  In the not-for-profit world, Paul was Chairman of the Board of the Cleveland Institute of Art, and he was an active member of the advisory board of the Zell-Lurie Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Michigan and the President’s Visiting Committee of Case Western Reserve University until his death. Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Elizabeth Hunt Brentlinger.  He is survived by their children, Paula Brentlinger of Seattle, WA, David (Peggy) Brentlinger of San Francisco, CA, Sara (Robert) Walters of Arlington, VA; their grandchildren, Bryce and Nina Brentlinger and Julia and Lauren Walters; and his close companion Joan Brown Campbell. A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at the Amasa Stone Chapel at Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH  44106. Entombment was held privately in Dayton, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Great Lakes Theater, the Cleveland Play House, the University of Michigan, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Marilyn Brentlinger Scholarship Fund at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, or the Chautauqua Foundation’s Joan Brown Campbell Fund at the Department of Religion.
