Mark Joseph Hoenigman, arborist extraordinaire, passed away on July 16, 2024, his 41st wedding anniversary to his beloved wife, Janet Gerding Hoenigman, who was at his side. He was born to Joseph and Florence (Krupka) Hoenigman on June 21, 1957, who proceeded him in death. Together with them, he joins his brothers, Michael and Jimmy (Marilyn) and his sister, Jeanne Martin (Al), in the eternal forest where he can lecture to his hearts content.
Mark was raised in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, went to Mayfield schools and went on to Hiram College joining the police force there soon afterwards. He later was hired in Hunting Valley, Ohio where he became a sergeant and an active participant in ASIS, the American Society for Industrial Security, helping to provide security for the homeowners in that community.
Upon his retirement from the Valley, he became more heavily involved in the tree community (his family among the trees) influencing many other arborists and facets of the industry along the way.
He had many endeavors and, from an early age, loved the woods and discovering the trees and plants growing there. He enjoyed traveling, tree research, hunting and fishing, tree propagation, country music, tree grafting, gourmet game cooking, both indoor and outdoor, which he taught, with his wife . . . and . . . trees. He combined all of these to make his life one large adventure for himself and his family.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, Janet T. DeRenzo (Dom), Lisa Baty (Scott), Rachel Cooper (Ryan Boyton) and son, Cooper Hoenigman - as well as his grandchildren, Devann, Cody (Ricky), Domenic (Cailin), Gabi, Alex (Alisa), Emily (Thomas),
John Mark, Lyla Grace and Beckam - and great-grandchild, Cecilia. He loved them all as if they were his own.
Also surviving him are his cousins who he loved like siblings, Cheryl Strumbly (Ray), Frank Krupka (Linda), Cathy DiBartelo (Fred), Tom Hoenigman (Renee), Al Hoenigman (Charlene) and so many other cousins, nieces and nephews with whom he interacted often.
While Mark was proud of his work with the EOUV, ISA, OIAA, ANSI standards, the TREE Fund and Biomechanics, his heart belonged to Sanctuary Farms, a small endeavor Mark started because he couldn’t bear to see any plant - sick or not - discarded,
so he brought them all “home”. He found solace there, amongst the “misfits” and single cultivars, especially in the last years of his life.
Seeing the toll his illness took on those who cared for him throughout, he recently applied for non-profit status for the Farm in the hopes that funding could be directed towards some small respite for caregivers. To that end, in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Sanctuary Farm, 14740 Watt Rd., Novelty, Ohio. 44072.
Memorial Services to be held August 31, 2024 at 2 PM at the EOUV Club, Pekin Rd., Novelty, Ohio, 44072 where Mark was a lifetime member.
