Marilou Kelly, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away June 23, 2024, in Chagrin Falls. She will be remembered for her good humor, incredible artistic talent, and incomparable strong will.
Born September 12, 1935, in Alton, Illinois, Marilou was the daughter of Stephen and Helen Kelly. She was a graduate of Beaumont School in Cleveland Heights and Immaculata Junior College in Washington, D.C. In 1956, she married the late George Kelly, her companion of 50 years. Her family is certain they are together again, sharing a good laugh and a strong drink.
Marilou is preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, Robert (Nancy), Stephanie (Michael) and Tom (Estelle). She is survived by her brother, Ed (Gertrude), three sons, Stephen, Donald (Julie), Charles (Todd), ten grandchildren, Carlin (Aaron), Megan (Andrew), Cristin, Kaitlin (Mark), Colleen (Nick), Connal (Matt), Cormac (Rachel), Delaney (Kevin), Colin (Melissa), Cian, eleven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other close family members including Denise Kelly and Melanie and Erik Barnes. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren. In recent years, she fondly noted how loud they were at family gatherings.
Marilou was truly a woman of many talents. She could prepare a gourmet meal, tend a magnificent garden, restore antique furniture and stitch an intricate design on a throw pillow. She shared her love of crafting with the community as co-owner of Strictly Stitchery in Chagrin Falls. She enjoyed a good book and looked forward to the Sunday comics in the newspaper. She was fortunate to have traveled and was eager to learn about different cultures. She often recounted her favorite memories, many of them featuring the mischievous girls of Lake Lucerne. She was her grandkids favorite babysitter, teaching them how to bake, letting them play dress up and taking them to her fancy hair salon. She was excited to try new things, found joy in every endeavor she undertook and laughed each and every day. She was a long-time parishioner of Saint Martin’s Episcopal Church.
Marilou lived 88 wonderful years, but the last six months were difficult. Her family is grateful for the kind and compassionate care she received from the doctors, nurses, aides and others at Hillcrest Hospital, The Lantern and Gentiva Hospice Care.
Marilou never missed a chance to throw a party, so her family will hold a celebration of life later this year. In honor of Marilou and her love of all dogs, please consider a donation to Rescue Village in Geauga County.
