Formerly of Chagrin Falls, OH, passed away peacefully on Wednesday the 24 of January 2024, at the age of 91. He was welcomed into Heaven by his parents William Lee Houston and Florence, Edith Carraker, Houston, his sister Mildred Sechler and brothers Lin, Junior, Howard, Jack and Jim.
Walt loved his wife Jean of 68 years (nee Skillman). He is also survived by his children, Pamela Jean Houston Draper (Arthur), Loren Walter Houston, Jr., (Jenny), Charles Houston (Jim) and Richard Houston (Christine). He is adored by his grandchildren, Christopher Draper, Andrew Draper (Alyssa), Elizabeth Draper Houser (Alex), Avery Houston, Drew Houston, and Loren Walter Houston, III. He has 2 great grandchildren, Emma Jean Houser and Leela Maeve Houston.
Walt attended Washington High School in Massillon, OH and played football for the Massillon Tigers. He went on to play football at the University of Miami and then transferred to Purdue University where he continued to play football on a scholarship. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Gimlet Leadership Honorary for varsity athletes at Purdue and later served as Chairman on the Purdue President’s Council. Post college, Walt played with the Washington Redskins for one year. He joined the Army Reserve in San Antonio, TX after marrying, Jean, whom he met at Purdue. He was the owner and President of Superior Container Inc. for 33 years. He and Jean enjoyed splitting their time between Chagrin Falls and Naples, FL for many years where he enjoyed playing his best golf. Walt had a larger-than-life personality and valued family and friends immeasurably.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice or plant a tree from the funeral home website.
A CELEBRATION OF LIFE WILL BE HELD AT 11 AM. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2024 AT PARKSIDE CHURCH, 7100 PETTIBONE ROAD, CHAGRIN FALLS, OH. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM 10AM UNTIL THE TIME OF SERVICE.
