Lieutenant Commander John S. Althans (Ret.) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio passed away on 23 June 2022. He was 66 years old.
Born on 6 July 1955 to John W. Althans and Julie (Maxine) Stanley Althans. John was a star athlete and excelled in academics at Kenston High School. He was inducted into the Kenston Hall of Fame in 2018.
His hard work, determination, and talents led him to the U.S. Naval Academy where he continued to shine both academically and athletically. He was a two-time NCAA All-American wrestler, Navy Wrestling Team Co-Captain, and record holder of the most wrestling wins at the U.S. Naval Academy, along with a three-time semester Superintendent academic list recipient. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and General Engineering in 1977. In 2022, his talents were recognized with another induction, this one to the USNA Athletic Hall of Fame.
However during his time at the Naval Academy, his greatest win was meeting the love of his life, Rosemarie (Rory) Roberto during the end of his plebe year in 1974, and they married in 1978 in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
After graduation, John was assigned to Flight School in Pensacola and received his Naval Aviator Wings in 1978. He was assigned to operational squadron VF-11 (Red Rippers) from 1979-1983, flying an F-14 Tomcat. He served in the US Navy for 6 years after his graduation from the Academy, serving 2 cruises on aircraft carriers which allowed him to see the world. He resigned from Active duty commission as a Lieutenant in 1983 and was assigned to U.S. Naval Reserves.
After retiring from active duty John and Rory moved back to Chagrin Falls where he joined Althans Insurance Agency in 1983. He became Principal and co-owner of the agency in 1992.
John was a true outdoorsman and was often found golfing, hunting, riding his bike, swimming in the ocean, and taking his daily walks. Even after his time in the Navy, John was able to travel the world extensively with Rory. John could make every stranger a friend and loved getting to know people everywhere he went, earning the respect of so many of his peers. He had an all-around zest for life.
Of all of John’s accomplishments, his greatest source of pride was his family. He was a dedicated husband to Rory for 44 years, and father to his children Jennifer (Kevin) and Johnny. He was a proud grandfather to his granddaughter, Paige.
John was predeceased by his parents, John W. Althans and Julie Maxine Stanley Althans. He is survived by his wife, Rory; children, Jennifer Iannarino (Kevin) and Johnny; his granddaughter, Paige; his siblings James Althans (Kammie) and Deborah Evans (David), as well as his nieces and nephews John D. Evans II (Tricia), Erin Chorney (Dan), Shelby Evans, Jimmy Althans (Alexis) and Kendall who he loved dearly.
