Jerry E. Butler of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Chagrin Falls, Ohio, passed away on August 25, 2023. He was born on March 26, 1943, in Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents J.B. and Betty Butler and his brother Dr. Robert B. Butler.
Jerry graduated from Farmington New Mexico Highschool in 1961. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a Sigma Chi and graduated from Central State University in Edmond, OK. He was a Marine Corps veteran. He retired as a Senior Vice President of Atlantic National Bank in Brunswick, Georgia. In St. Simons, he was very active in his civic life with Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, Rotary International and many other organizations. Jerry was a voracious reader of non-fiction, especially of the history of the Civil War and WW II. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed time at the gym. He loved college football and was a devoted Oklahoma University Sooners and UGA Bulldogs fan. He had a love for animals, especially his rescue dogs. He was a caring, generous, and kind soul and never met a stranger.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judith Ann, his son, Dr. John B. Butler, his wife Laurie and their children Alexander, Emma, Elle, Ansley, and John Bennett. Also surviving his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Meredith and her children Haley and Wesley; his sister Marilynn Parker and her children Justin, Matthew Jones, and Alison as well as his brother’s widow Nancy Butler and her children David and Kelly, her husband David Valentine and their 3 children. He is also survived by his rescue dog buddy “Little Bit.”
A Graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 31st at 1:00pm at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. All are welcome.
