Grace D. (Daschbach) Shields

Grace Ann Daschbach Shields, 85, passed away Friday, February 19, 2016. She was the second daughter of Theresa and James C. Daschbach (40 years a reporter at the Cleveland Plain Dealer). Grace was born and raised in Lakewood before moving to Cleveland as a teen. After graduating from Ohio University in 1953, she came to Chagrin Falls, where she met her husband, Edgar, while they were working backstage at the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre. They continued their interest in the Little Theater, though not actively. Grace taught sixth grade in Chagrin Falls for three years before stopping to raise her family. She went back to teaching full time in 1972 and taught third and fourth grade for 19 more years in the Chagrin Falls School District, sometimes teaching children of former students. She was also active in local civic organizations such as the League of Women Voters, the Chagrin Falls Women’s Club, the Jaycee Wives, and the Chagrin Falls Historical Society. She was a member of the Federated Church for over 60 years. She enjoyed nearly thirty summers at Chautauqua Institution, where she was a member of the Bird, Tree, and Garden Club as well as the Chautauqua Scientific and Literary Circle.

          Grace is survived by her husband of over sixty beautiful years, Edgar. She is also survived by her children, Peggy Klein (Matt) of California, Tom Shields (Claire) of North Carolina, Dave Shields (Sue) of Florida, and Rick Shields (Chris) of Toronto, Canada, as well as six grandchildren: D.J. (David, Jr.), Sarah, and Elizabeth Shields, and Aaron, Lucas, and Eli Klein.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 26 from 4-7 PM at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home, 95 S. Franklin St., Chagrin Falls. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2:00 PM at the Federated Church, 76 Bell St., Chagrin Falls, followed by a family-only graveside service.  Arrangements are being handled by Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home. 

Grace suffered from dementia for the last 10 of years of her life. In lieu of flowers, donate to the research for the cause and cure of this terrible disease, or to another charity of your choice.
