Alfred (Freddy) Cox Obituary

Alfred G. Cox (Freddy) of Chagrin Falls died on August 20th, 2024, at the age of 51.

Freddy is survived by his best friend, Peter Becker, his beloved girlfriend, Amy G. Hopkins of Chagrin Falls, and his enduring and loving siblings: Carlene Holtz of Evergreen, Colorado (Spouse Patrick Holtz), Robert Cox of Imperial, Pennsylvania (Spouse Elyse Cox), and Robert Cockrell of Brooklyn, Ohio (Fiancée Katie Bellini).

Freddy is preceded in death by his devoted mother, Patricia Ann Monahan, his father, Robert Cox, and stepfather, Robert Cockrell.

Freddy had numerous nieces and nephews who looked up to him and loved him. This included his nieces Cailyn Nelson (Spouse Sean Nelson and son Canyon), Cecelia Cox, May Holtz, and Quinn Holtz. And nephews Owen Cox, Christopher Exline, and Carson Exline. In addition, Amy's children Joe and Tommy Conway.

Freddy is survived and preceded by numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles who witnessed, taught, and honored his journey from a young boy growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, on Fleet Avenue to moving to Chagrin Falls in 1982 with his siblings, becoming an exceptional athlete at Chagrin Falls High School (Class of 1991), and then adulthood working as a dedicated and longtime employee at OCI Construction.

Freddy was a cherished and long-standing member of the Local 860 Laborers Union. He was a devoted dog lover, treating his beloved pets as his own children. In addition, Fred was an avid Ohio State fan, often seen sporting Tribe or Buckeyes gear. One of Freddy's favorite pastimes was sitting on the deck next to a warm bonfire, surrounded by his dogs, a cold beer in hand, and the company of loved ones.

Any serious discussion of great athletes at Chagrin Falls High School would not be serious if it omitted Freddy. He had multiple letters in football, basketball, and baseball.

But what matters the most now are not the records but the memories of practice and games with teammates growing up–who remain lifelong friends, competing together at C.S. Harris Stadium, Lenny May Field, and Quisenberry Gym. Most importantly, that love and joy for each other carried onto barbecues and events watching the Browns, Buckeyes, and Indians on countless Blossom weekends and fall afternoons as adults.

It has been said that when someone you love passes away, a family or friend will never laugh again. And that is simply not true. We just won't be young again. Freddy's passing is a painful reminder of that. We miss you, Freddy. We honor you. We love you.
