Betty Mattie died of natural causes on March 22, 2018 in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She was born in Rock Island, Illinois, the first of two children born to Kathrine and Bartol Rollis. While attending Augustana College, she met her first husband, the late Lewis Schilling. They married during WWII and had one son, the late Dick Schilling. In 1972, she married the late William A. Mattie, former president of the Eaton Corporation.
As a co-founder of the Twentieth/Twenty-First Century Club, Betty through the years brought over 1200 locally, nationally and internationally distinguished speakers to Cleveland. As a gracious hostess, she warmly welcomed all to her beloved city and maintained many lifelong friendships. Her first organized meeting in 1957 was on the topic of porcelains. Alexander Haig, United States Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan, was her all- time favorite speaker. When not in Cleveland, Betty resided in Palm Beach, Florida.
Betty, a loving aunt, is survived by her nephew, Bill Carothers, his wife, Pat, two great-nieces and a great-nephew. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Kathie Blair of Connecticut. She is preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Callahan. Interment services will be private.
